CCTV, short for closed-circuit television, was discovered in 1942 by German engineer Walter Bruch, allowing him and others to monitor V2 rocket launches with a private system. However, their purpose is the same as the surveillance 79 years ago. CCTV cameras are widely used in offices, buildings, residences, and other public places for security purposes. The introduction of this technology has led to significant developments in state surveillance around the world, greatly expanded sophisticated surveillance and social control systems, and enabled many crime prevention measures. The biggest advantage is that it prevents internal and external theft.
From May 23, 2018, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has mandated the registration of CCTV cameras as per IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010 under the BIS Mandatory Registration Scheme in the Gazette of India. Online BIS registration ensures consumer safety and provides legal benefits.

- Create an account on the BIS website and fill out the BIS CRS application form with all required product and company information.
- Select a BIS-accredited testing laboratory to perform the required tests. Request a test report from the laboratory and submit it with your application.
- Pay applicable testing and certification fees.
- If necessary, BIS will inspect your production facility to ensure compliance with the standards.
- After successful testing and inspection, BIS issues a certificate.

As per the quality control order, BIS registration for CCTV camera and recorders is mandatory for domestic manufacturers and importers of CCTV camera and recorders to sell them in the Indian Market. No domestic manufacturers and importers can sell CCTV camera and recorders without BIS certification for CCTV camera and recorders in the Indian Market.
